Inside Miami Beach’s South of Fifth (SoFi)

In Miami Beach there’s a neighborhood that’s referred to as SoFi, or Miami Beach South of Fifth. This location once was a popular tourist destination. It’s still beloved by visitors for its fine restaurants and prime location, but the area has been “taken back” by locals who’ve endeavored to give SoFi a quiet, residential and tree-lined feel. Now, many Miamians are now from their land-locked homes in the city to a condo on the ocean in Miami Beach South of Fifth. Locals include wealthy business people or big-time celebrities living in their first or second home on the water. SoFi has the up-and-coming feel while merging city life and a vacation retreat.

Miami Beach South of Fifth SoFi

While SoFi is a popular local neighborhood, it still sees a good share of tourism owing to its South Beach locale. If you live here, you’ll have plenty to offer your incoming guests. Visiting the area, there several five-star hotel options in the vicinity, and the restaurant scene is bustling. The hotels range from right on the water to more within the city each with their own unique charms. Miami Beach South of Fifth has a variety of dining opportunities from breakfast to late night drinks, each highlighting the neighborhood in their own way.

As far as hotels go, there are three options worth looking into. The first is your typical hotel stay with the Hilton Bentley Miami’s South Beach. It’s right on the ocean and provides your usual hotel amenities including suites with an ocean view. The other two hotels are more original and provide a unique experience that sets your trip to SoFi apart from other vacations. Century is a boutique hotel on Ocean Drive, and Lord Balfour Hotel is a British-inspired option.

Starting with breakfast there’s Big Pink, which offers a family style feel with portions large enough to share. They are open early and late, with meals at an affordable price point. If brunch is more your style Tongue & Cheek has a great free coffee service starting at 10 a.m. and a brunch on the weekends starting at 11 a.m. They use fresh ingredients and provide a neighborhood bistro vibe. This is also a hot spot for happy hour, from 5-8 p.m., which draws the locals and gives an authentic Miami Beach South of Fifth experience.

For lunch and dinner the best option is Monty’s Sunset on the west side of the city. A well-known boater’s hot spot, visitors can rent a boat at Club Nautico, right in front of the bar. This location is best known for its drink specials and peel-and-eat shrimp. A band is frequently on their outdoor stage, creating a great atmosphere for winding down from the day, or gearing up for a night on the town.
